In Germany 31,144 employees work in 1,832 orthopaedic and health care companies.

The vocational training and promotion of the young is done actively: more than 2,900 young people are trained in the profession of orthopaedic engineer.

The Bundesinnungsverband für Orthopädie-Technik (BIV) represents 16 State Orthopaedic Engineering Guilds with approximately 1,550 medium-sized orthopaedic firms / health care firms. Thus the proportion of companies organized in guilds is 83 per cent.

Political activity seeks the dialogue with the proper ministries, with the experts' committees within the parties as well as with politicians interested in health policy and in the concerns of the medium-sized business.

Questions of the acknowledgement of the German profession outline, quality standards and other standards are being discussed. Being a member of the International Union of the Orthopaedic Engineers (INTERBOR), whose executive mangement is looked after by the BIV, proves to be very effective when it comes to the international representation of interests.
