John Dalli has been nominated as new Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy. He is the Maltese minister for Social Policy since March 2007. (see CV attached) Mr. Dalli will be responsible for the Directorate General Health and Consumer (SANCO). The Units ENTR F.2 and F.3 responsible for pharmaceutical products, medical devices and cosmetics will move form DG Enterprise to DG SANCO, and consequently also the European Medicines Agency.
Each Commissioner-designate is invited to a three-hour public hearing with the committee(s) of the European Parliament responsible for the portfolio concerned. Today the hearings of the Commissioners-Designate in the European Parliament started. The hearing of the Commissioner-Designate John Dalli responsible for Health and Consumer Policy will take place on Thursday, 14th January 2010 (13.00 - 16.00). Parliament votes on approval of the whole European Commission as a body. The vote in the EP plenary will take place on 26 January 2010. The new Commission can then be formally appointed by the European Council, acting by a qualified majority.
